Ladies versus Gents 2010

The annual Ladies versus Gents in aid of the local Enable charity will take place on Thursday 5th August at 6.45 pm. Notices have been posted on club notice boards, please append your name  for this annual event. Please support this worthwhile charity.

Helensburgh Bowling Club

Helensburgh Bowling Club was established in 1861 and has a long and successful history. The club situated at the top end of Sinclair Street, boasts of two greens surrounded by ideal viewing areas, and a clubhouse, which gives a panoramic view of both greens. The membership hovers around the 200 mark with active Juniors, Ladies and Gents sections. We are always looking for members who would like to play the game, and offer a reduced first year fee, who has not played bowls before, should they join. Come along and see the facilities and talk to us if you are interested.

 
Directors Versus Members 2010

The annual game between Past President’s/Directors and Members for the John Malcolm Memorial trophy took place at the club on Thursday 15th July 2010 at 7.00pm.
An excellent number of players, 3 Rinks and 2 triples, played in the game, where the members tried their very best to get the better of the “ White Collar Brigade” of the club over 13 ends. Although played in good humour both sides are always anxious to win the trophy, the members, who last won the trophy in 2001, were particularly keen to win this year.President_with_Winners_web
The members will have to wait another year to break their losing run as the Past Presidents Directors led by the club President Walter Jamieson were the victors by the narrow margin of 69 shots to 58. The highest up rink, in the Past Presidents/Directors team were, Annette Garrick, Cathy Crossan, John Stead and Hugh Murray (Skip) 12 shots up. The best rink in the members team were Jill Dacombe, Cassandra McKerron, Martin Air and Stephen Hepton (Skip) who 11 shots up
After the game, the President Walter Jamieson presented the prizes to the winning rink and Allan President_receives_J._Malcom_memorial_Trophy_webHowie presented the John Malcom Trophy to the President. All the players then enjoyed a buffet supper prepared by the ladies committee. President Walter Jamieson thanked the match committee and the ladies for organising what was a very enjoyable and successful evening.

Cancer Research Wappenschaw 2010

Twelve heroic members braved the horrendous weather on Wednesday 14th July for the clubs annual Cancer Research Wappenschaw’s, for a worthy cause indeed. The Ladies Wappenschaw in the afternoon was cancelled due to weather conditions, however the mixed wappenschaw was played as usual in the evening when President Walter Jamieson welcomed members of the club to the annual event, the men, as well as the ladies joined in the “Pink Dress Format”, and some even suited it. The players took to the greens and played 9 ends even although the rain was very Players_before_game_webheavy and incessant. The winning triple were George Tait, Claire Macindoe and Iain Macleod(Skip) who were presented with their Prizes by The President Walter Jamieson All the players, despite being soaked through, enjoyed an excellent fun night of bowls, which contributes to a very worth and deserving cause.
The club president, Walter welcomed Mrs Sharon A. Sheridan, the Area Volunteer Manager from Cancer Research UK and presented her with a cheque for £240, Players__President_webwhich included the proceeds from the Cancer Research Bottle donations from members and visitors, at both Wappensachaw’s. Sharon thanked the members for their generous donation saying that the Cancer Research UK rely solely on donations like this to fund their vital research. The President thanked Sharon for taking the time to travel from Falkirk in such conditions and the members for their generosity and attendance.

Honda Pairs 2010

The very popular Helensburgh Bowling Club, HONDA Gents Open Pairs competition, was held at the club during the week commencing 28th June 2010. The competition is very kindly sponsored by Helensburgh Honda and the competition is run on a knockout basis, this year it attracted a large entry from within and out with the Helensburgh area. The early rounds were played on Monday, Tuesday and the early session on Wednesday all over 13 ends. The semi A._Howie_G.Stephenfinals were played Friday, and in the first of them Allan Howie and Gordon Stephen from Helensburgh, last years winners, won through in a tight game against Simon Wade and Charles Mc Lelland from Garelochhead/Helensburgh BC, by 12 shots to 9. The M._Leishman_S._Hornesecond semi final resulted in a comfortable win for the young pair from Garelochhead BC, Kevin Leishman and Stuart Horne from Garelochhead BC over another local pair, father and son, John McBride and Duncan McBride Snr from Colgrain BC.
The final was also played on Friday evening over 13 ends and was watched by a large audience in the clubhouse. The game was a very close encounter from start to finish with some excellent bowling from all the players, Kevin Leishman and Stuart Horne scored the first shot before Allan and Gordon scored a 3 at the second end. The Garelochhead pair then scored 3 shots in two ends to lead by 4 shots to 3, back came the Helensburgh Pair of Allan Howie and Gordon Stephen with another count of 3, followed by a 1 to lead by 7 shots to 4. Kevin and Stuart however were not finished yet and responded with a 4 to lead by 8 shots to 7. The Helensburgh Pair then scored a 1 to level the game, only for the Garelochhead pair to regain the lead with a 2 at the next end, yet another 1 shot scored by Allan and Gordon President_Sponsor_Winners_Webnarrowed the lead to 1 shot to set up an exciting final two ends, in the event Kevin and Stuart score a 1 shot at each of these ends to snatch the trophy from last years winners with a well deserved 12 shots to 6 win to take the trophy to Garelochhead.

After the game President Walter Jamieson introduced Eric Chattelle from Helensburgh Honda who congratulated the players on the excellent bowling. Eric then presented the prizes to the Losing Semi finalists, the Runners up, and finally the Trophy and Prizes to the winners Kevin Leishman and Stuart Horne from Garelochhead. The President then thanked Helensburgh Honda for their continued sponsorship and the competitors for taking part in what was another excellent competition this year.
