Honda Pairs 2010

The very popular Helensburgh Bowling Club, HONDA Gents Open Pairs competition, was held at the club during the week commencing 28th June 2010. The competition is very kindly sponsored by Helensburgh Honda and the competition is run on a knockout basis, this year it attracted a large entry from within and out with the Helensburgh area. The early rounds were played on Monday, Tuesday and the early session on Wednesday all over 13 ends. The semi A._Howie_G.Stephenfinals were played Friday, and in the first of them Allan Howie and Gordon Stephen from Helensburgh, last years winners, won through in a tight game against Simon Wade and Charles Mc Lelland from Garelochhead/Helensburgh BC, by 12 shots to 9. The M._Leishman_S._Hornesecond semi final resulted in a comfortable win for the young pair from Garelochhead BC, Kevin Leishman and Stuart Horne from Garelochhead BC over another local pair, father and son, John McBride and Duncan McBride Snr from Colgrain BC.
The final was also played on Friday evening over 13 ends and was watched by a large audience in the clubhouse. The game was a very close encounter from start to finish with some excellent bowling from all the players, Kevin Leishman and Stuart Horne scored the first shot before Allan and Gordon scored a 3 at the second end. The Garelochhead pair then scored 3 shots in two ends to lead by 4 shots to 3, back came the Helensburgh Pair of Allan Howie and Gordon Stephen with another count of 3, followed by a 1 to lead by 7 shots to 4. Kevin and Stuart however were not finished yet and responded with a 4 to lead by 8 shots to 7. The Helensburgh Pair then scored a 1 to level the game, only for the Garelochhead pair to regain the lead with a 2 at the next end, yet another 1 shot scored by Allan and Gordon President_Sponsor_Winners_Webnarrowed the lead to 1 shot to set up an exciting final two ends, in the event Kevin and Stuart score a 1 shot at each of these ends to snatch the trophy from last years winners with a well deserved 12 shots to 6 win to take the trophy to Garelochhead.

After the game President Walter Jamieson introduced Eric Chattelle from Helensburgh Honda who congratulated the players on the excellent bowling. Eric then presented the prizes to the Losing Semi finalists, the Runners up, and finally the Trophy and Prizes to the winners Kevin Leishman and Stuart Horne from Garelochhead. The President then thanked Helensburgh Honda for their continued sponsorship and the competitors for taking part in what was another excellent competition this year.

 
SWBA DISTRICT 18 FINALS 2010

In brilliant sunshine Lady Captain Annette Garrick welcomed the Secretary of District 18, Jean Irwin from Dumbarton Bowling Club and the players, in the district, of the Scottish Women’s Bowling Association to the club on Sunday 20th June at 10.00am. The ladies had travelled from as far a field as Campbeltown, Ardrishaig and Oban on one side and up to Radnor Park in the Clydebank area, on the other side, to play the semi finals and finals in their respective competitions, the prize for the winners being a place in the National Finals of the Association at Northfield in Ayr. District Secretary Jean welcomed all the players and wished them well in the games.

The semi Finals were played in the morning which resulted in the following players
going forward to the finals in the afternoon and the results of the games played:
The Senior Fours final was played between Vale of Leven BC represented by M. MacKenzie, M. Smith, D. Gillies and I. Weir (Skip) who were defeated by the four from Ardrishaig BC, J. Robertson, C. Crawford, M. Annan and F. McLachlan(Skip) by 20 shots to 5.
In the Fours competition the rink from Campbeltown, J. Miller, S. Gilchrist, L. Brodie and S. Anderson, who despite a great come back, were defeated by the four from Radnor Park BC, J. Curran, M. Wright, I. Patterson and L. Smith (Skip) in a close game by 17 shots to 13.
The Triples final was won by the triple from the local club Cardross represented by, Karen Muir, Jean Bell and Eleanor Graham (Skip) who defeated the triple from Radnor Park BC, S. Lyle, N. Creamer and Margaret Strattan (Skip) by 15 Shots to 11 in what was another close game.
The Pairs final saw the Cardross pair of Marion Mc Clenaghan and Irene Aitken (Skip) face the pair from Townend BC, B. Marsland and J. Clarke, both pairs were level after the normal 18 ends, an extra end was needed to decide the winner and the Townend Pair took the honours in this end to send then through to the finals by 19 shots to 18
Junior_Singles_Winner__Runner_UpThe Junior Singles, played on a sets basis paired Natalie Sharp from Colgrain BC against young Emma McIntyre from Dumbarton BC, both players played excellent bowls, however in the end Natalie took the honours by 2 sets to nil.
The Singles competition two players who were amongst the far travelled players for the day, Helen MacLean from Oban BC Ladies_Singles_Winner_webagainst Kathleen McGougan from Campbeltown Argyle BC, this was a tight game from start to finish with the lead changing on several occasions, in the end Helen MacLean’s experience won through and she triumphed by 21 shots to 16.
After the game the ladies enjoyed tea provided by the ladies of the club. Winners_for_Nortrhfield_webDistrict Secretary Jean Irwin thanked the club and all involved for their input to what had been a excellent day in every respect. Jean then asked the Lady Captain Annette Garrick to present the ladies with their Winners and Runners Up Medals.
Annette congratulated all the players and wished the ladies who would now compete at the Northfield National Finals, commencing on 28th July, every good wish

 
Ladies Laurenson Triples 2010

The Helensburgh Ladies Open Triples competition took place on Sunday 13th June 2010 commencing at 10.00am. Triples from clubs from the local area and a\also from outside the area and were divided into 4 Sections of 6 Triples. After the section games the triples skipped by Wilma Hannah ( Helensburgh BC) Lorna Gallagher ( Kilmacolm BC) and Morag Morrison ( Kilmacolm BC) qualified from their sections without losing a section game. The fourth triple to qualify, having lost only one game, was skipped by Kath Fotheringham from Helensburgh BC. The draw for the semi final set up a Helensburgh versus Kilmacolm

Semi_Final_2_WebIn the first semi final the Wilma Hannah triple score a two at the first end, they could not however consolidate on this and lost 7 shots in 4 ends to the Morag Morrison triple, Wilma’s triple scored a two at the last end but this was not enough to stop Morag’s triple going through to the final by 7 shots to 4. The second semi final started on a much closer vein with each team scoring three shots each in the first two ends, Kaths triple then scored a further 3 shots in two ends before Lorna Gallagher’s triple scored a one, Kath’s team then sealed their final place with a two shot score at the final end to win by 8 shots to 4 to ensure a Helensburgh versus Kilmacolm final.
The final, was very much a game of each triple winning two ends in succession, Morag Finalists_WebMorrison’s triple scoring a two followed by a three only for Kath Fotheringham’s triple scoring two one shot ends. The Morrison Triple then secured the trophy with a further 3 shots in two ends to complete a well deserved Trophy win for 2010 by 6 shots to 2.
Winners_with_captain_WebAfter the game Mrs Margaret Laurenson who along with her husband Rob have sponsored the event for 27 years presented the Trophy, and prizes to the players assisted by the club Lady Captain Annette Garrick and Ladies Match support as well as the players from many clubs who had competed in the competition.

RNLI Wappenshaw 2010
The members gathered to Support the RNLI in their Annual wappenshaw for the charity held on Wednesday 9th June, all contributions from the Ladies game in the afternoon and the Mixed game in the evening were given in support of the charity. The evening game, in very clement weather, was played over 13 ends and resulted in the triple of Paddy Nichol, Stewart Gray and Skip Hugh Murray winning by an comfortable margin of 22 shots to 5.President__Colin_Winners_Web
After the game the club President Walter Jamieson introduce Mr Colin Gardner from the RNLI saying the club were always happy to sponsor this wappenschaw for the charity, which they have done for many years and this year he was very happy to hand over a cheque for £150 to the RNLI.
Colin then presented the winning triple with their prizes and thanked the President Walter for this years verygenerous donation. Colin commented that last year was the busiest year the RNLI had witnessed since 1824,when they had launched on over President_Presents_Cheque_to_Colin_web9,000 occasions , the Helensburgh boat having had 40 call outs, this year the local call outs to date were 17. Nationally the call outs resulted in the rescue of over 20 people per day, and as such all donations were more than welcome. President Walter thanked Colin for taking the time to attend.
