Ladies Closing of Greens 2009

The Ladies Closing of Greens took place on Wednesday afternoon the 23rd September at 2.30pm

Lady Captain Sheena Lary welcomed the Club President Amelia McBride and Honarary Life Member Isa Don to the closing along with about 35 Lady members, HLM Sadie Montgomery sent her apologies for not attending.

Although the weather was not very great two rinks and one triple took to the greens for 6 ends of bowls before all the ladies sat down together for tea after which the President Amelia McBride proposed a toast to the Club Champion Annette Christie who unfortunately was on holiday.

The Lady Captain then presented the winners of the bowls, Cathy Boyle,Joy Farrow and Cathy Crossan,with their Prizes. The Lady Captain also presented the winners of the best contested rink, Annette Garrick, Nan Darroch, Kath Fotheringham and President Amelia McBride with their Prizes.The_Lady_Captain_makes_her_point

The Lady Captain then thanked her committee and members for their support throughout the year as well as the green keeper Gavin McCall, the bar staff Shirley Kennon for their efforts during the the year. The Lady President in her remarks said that in this her Presidents year the club nad been extremely busy with high profile competitions, visiting parties etc, and she thanked all the ladies who had helped with catering and other duties at these events on behalf of the club. The President further remarked that events on the scale we have had this year do not just happen, the needed someone at the helm, and she considered that the club was fortunate indeed to have Sheena Lary as their Lady Captain this year, she had worked tirelessly and achieved fanatastic results throughout the year with all the Ladies supporting her. The raflle was then drawn and the ladies season was over, they now look forward to their carpet bowls commencing on Tuesday 6th September.

GBA Mixed Pairs 2009

The GBA Mixed Pairs competition was played at the club on Sunday 20th September, 28 Pairs from various clubs within the Association took part and were split into 4 sections with each team playing each other in the sections, on a leaguer basis, to qualify for the semi-Final. When the section games were completed, the section winners were: Marian McClenaghan and Robin Cavana, from Cardross/Helensburgh who qualified on shots difference from Sheena Lary & Gordon Stephen from Helensburgh, Amelia McBride  & George Sneddon, also from Helensburgh,who qualified with full points, having not lost a game in their section, Eleanor Graham & Roddy Phillips from Cardross and Cathy Crossan & Don Lilley from Helensburghwho won their sections on a clear points decision.

In the Semi-Finals Cathy and Don faced Marion and Robin who more or less dominated the game, apart from one end when Don's team scored a two, and went on to win by 10 shots to 2. The second Semi-Final was a different scene altogether as Eleanor and Roddy raced into a 7 shots to 0 lead in just three ends. Amelia and George then scored a 2 and went into the last end 7 shots to 2 down, against all the odds they then scored a 5 to level ths game and force an extra end, which the also won by 1 shot to qualify for the Final.GBA_Mixed_Pairs_Winners_1_web

In the Final, Amelia and George were again slow to start and were 3 shots to Nil down after two ends, however they were about to pull off another big recovery and scored a 2 and two singles to win the game by 4 shots to 3. The last end being particularly exciting as the advantage swung from one team to the other with every bowl. Before this final both pairs had won the trophy on two occasions previously, Amelia and George made it three with this win. After the Final the GBA Past President Alistair Leckie presented the Losinig Semi-Finalists and Runners Up with with their prizes and the winners witht he Trophy and their prizes. George Sneddon thanked the GBA for organising the event, the club for the facilities, the ladies for the excellent Lunch provided and all the players for taking part.

 
Annual Floodlight Challenge Game
Ladies and Gents from Colgrain and Helensburgh gathered at Helensburgh BC for the final competitive game of the season on Friday 18th September when the annual Floodlight challenge game against Colgrain BC for the John Steven memorial trophy, supported by Mrs Sandra Steven, the late John's wife, was played at Helensburgh Bowling Club. All the proceeds from this game, and raffles etc, are donated to Macmillan Cancer Research.
Helensburgh President Amelia McBride welcomed the Colgrain President Vince Carr and his players to the club and the 6 rinks of players took to the greens to play 13 ends. The game, as usual, was very competitive with both teams looking to win. In the end the visitors from Colgrain were the victors by 76 shots to 56 a comfortable margin to win the trophy for the last  three years in succession.
After the game President Amelia presented the trophy and prizes to highest up Colgrain rink, E. Caldwell, H. Whiteford, R. Pearce and J. Rice skip Skip).Colgrain President Vince thanked the host club for their hospitality and in turn presented the highest up Helensburgh rink, W. Hannah, E. Smith, J. McBride and G.Tait(Skip) with their prizes. When all  donations etc were totalled the sum of £280 was raised and forwarded to Macmillan Cancer Research.

 
Jardine Trophy 2009

The_Trophy_WinnersThe Mixed Four Bowl, drawn Pairs competition for the Jardine trophy was played on Tuesday and Thursday 15th and 17th September. The section games were played on the Tuesday and the early session on Thursday. When the section games, which were played over six ends, were completed the Blue section had a clear winner on 8 points, Troy Mc Kerron and Cathy Crossan. The Red Section however had two Pairs on 7 points, Liz Fraser with Don Lilley, and Patricia Mc Callan with Campbell Jardine. When it came to shot difference, Don and Liz were the clear winners with plus 13, against Patricia and Campbell with plus 5  to set up the final between Troy and Cathy against Liz and Don.

In the final, also played on Thursday, Troy and Cathy had by far the better start scoring a 3 followed by a 1 to lead by 4 shots to nil before Liz & Don scored ,a 1 then a 2 to make the score 4 shots to 3 in favour of Troy and Cathy going in to the
5th end where Liz and Don scored a 3 to take the lead for the first time in the game, and to take  a 2 shot lead going into the last end of the game, try as they may Troy and Cathy could not pull the shots back and Liz and Don added another shot to their total to land the trophy for 2009 by 7 shots to 4
