Belhaven Triples 2009

The_Winners_webThe Popular Gents triples competition, kindly sponsored by Belhaven Brewers, was played at the Club on Sunday 13th September starting at 10.00am. Teams from Glasgow, Clydebank, Dumbarton, Dryman as well as the local area took part. The triples were divided into four sections and played a series of 6 end games to decide the qualifiers.
After the section games 3 sections produced clear winners, however one section had two teams on the same points, shots for and shots against , which resulted in the Helensburgh triple of Iain MacDonald, George Sneddon and Keith Tait having to take to the green against Scott Patterson, Dougie Strattan and John Patterson from  Radnor Park to play one end. Iain MacDonald got the end of to a great start for the Helensburgh triple by trailing the jack into the ditch, however his bowl in the ditch was a fair way from the jack, also in the ditch, the Radnor Park team, playing well, managed to get one about 3 feet from the ditch and in a straight line with the jack, which resulted in a very close measure, made a few times before it was decided Radnor Park had won the qualification place. This meant that the triples in the semi finals lined up as:

Billy Harvey                                              Scott Patterson
Allan Sharp                                               Dougie Strattan
Iain MacKenzie (Colgrain BC)              v      John Patterson ( Radnor Park BC)

Troy McKerron                                           Stewart Brown
Robin McKerron                                         John Young
Robin Cavana     (Helensburgh BC)        v     John MacKenzie. ( Buchanan Arms BC)

In the first Semi-Final the Colgrain Triple started well and kept their form to win by 8 shots top 2 against Radnor Park to reach the final. In the second Semi-Final, Buchanan Arms got off to a real flier, with the Helensburgh team unable to get
into the game, the Buchanan Arms team had a comfortable win to enter the final.
The final produced some fine bowling from both teams, the John MacKenzie triple opened the scoring with 3 shots, before both teams scored 1 shot to make the Buchanan Arms team lead by 4 shots to 2.Colgrain then scored another shot before
John Mackenzie and his team, who were put under a lot of pressure by the Colgrain Triple, played some great recovery shots to score 3 shots in the each of the last two ends to deservedly win the Trophy by 10 shots to 2.
After the games the Club President, Amelia McBride presented the prizes to the losing semi finalists and runners up, and then Presented the Trophy and Prizes to the winners for 2009, from Buchanan Arms BC, Stewart Brown, John Young and
John MacKenzie skip. John MacKenzie in accepting the trophy thanked the President and Helensburgh BC for providing the facilities, the organisation and the Ladies for providing the excellent food.

G.B.A 3-2-1 Competition 2009

321_Winners_2009_webThe annual Gareloch Bowling Association 3-2-1 competition was played at Colgrain Bowling Club on Saturday 5th September  commencing at 10.00am. Despite the weather, which was not very good, the clubs turned out for this rather different competition  which involves each club fielding a Single, a Pairs and a Triple, who then play each club to decide the winner on a league basis.Colgrain BC got off to a good start taking 4 points to Helensburgh BC 2 in the first game, they followed this by taking 5 points from Cardross, whilst Helensburgh gained all 6 points from Cove & Kilcreggan, and a further 6 points from Rhu to lead the table  with 14 points from Colgrain who were on 9 points, with a game in hand. In the first game after lunch, Colgrain had a 4 points  to 2 win over Rhu, with Helensburgh having a similar victory by 4  to 2 over Cardross. Helensburgh had now completed their games  with 18 points, Colgrain however, had a game to play, and had 13 points which meant they needed  all 6 points from their game with Cove & Kilcreggan, to secure the Trophy. In the event Colgrain dropped  2 points in the Triples in this game, which made Helensburgh the outright winners, by the narrowest of margins, with 18 Points to Colgrain’s 17. A magnificient achievement by our team, with Keith Tait, albiet with one or two close shaves, not losing a game all day.
After the games President Willie Lauchlan presented the Winners and runners up with the Trophy and Prizes, thanked the Ladies for providing lunch, ad Colgrain President Vince Carr for hosting the competition.

The Helensburgh team for this competition was Singles: Keith Tait, Pairs: George Sneddon and Hugh Murray (Skip)and the Triples: Allan Howie, Iain Macleod and Don Lilley (Skip)
