West Green Installation of Artificial Banks PDF Print E-mail

Work is now underway to replace the West Green banks with artificial banks. This project isWest_Green_Bank_frome_west_close_up_web part of the 5 year plan approved last year and will involve replacing all of the banks, with improved drainage and a path from the west side of the green around to the north side to where the new viewing area with seats was installed last year.

Volunteers are doing the work, with a sizeable saving in cost,and started about two weeks ago and already the north bank has competed the earth removal stage and work has started on the west bank to bring it to the same stage. The volunteers under the Green Convenor, George Sneedon have been working very hard indeed and thier hs been a good response with Hugh Murray, Ian Hume, George Tait, Walter Jamieson, Tom Adkin, Tony Bird and Martin Webb all contributing, well done lads. Any help is appreciated contact any of the above if you have time to spare.

Update 13th November

Work on the excavation of the North bank is complete and work is well in hand on laying the first layer of blocks for the new banks. Excavation work on the west bank of the green is also nearing completetion. The volunteers are really pushing it with the weather no obstacle, great job.

Update 30th November

The first layer of blocks on the North and West banks of the green has been completed, and work is progressing on the pathway aroound to the seats below the canopy of the cluhouse, the project manager is certainly pushing the volunteers along, even although he had his week away golfing, as well as a Saturday off for the football, enough said about that?Are_you_sure_its_level_Hugh

Update 3rd December

Since the last update the lads have worked very hard, in all weathers, to catch up to the Project managers target of having the block work on both the North and West banks completed by the end of November. This was achieved by 3rd December and in addition earth removal on the south bank was one third complete. A Great effort chaps and what an achievement.

Update 8th December

Two_Georges_get_ready_to_lay_first_course_of_blocks_in_west_bank_15th_DecemberThem work on the Project is estimated to about 50% complete, with the Block work on the North and  West bank completed. A Drain has beeen located at the south west corner of the green which will mean we do not have connect to a local authority drain. To date 357 man hours have been expended, by a small team of seven, who have moved 40 tons of earth and material and laid about 350 blocks. A marvellous achievement by this samall team

Update 15th December

Work is now well under way on the South and East banks with excavation work complete and Close_up_of_the_new_frontagethe first layer of blocks laid, earth removal has now reached a total of 48 tonnes, with 525 out of 685 blocks laid, all this has taken a total of 534 man hours which is remarkable, the team themselves feel the ELF'S must have been at work on sunday last when everybody was asleep or partying.

Update 14th February 2010

With a fairly lenghty period of snow at the turn of the year work was impossible for a a while, however as soon as the snow cleared, albiet it was followed by a long cold spell, the hardy volunteers set about the work again at an amazing pace, work almots every daylight hour available.

The drainage and banks around the green have been completed and only now await the fitting of the astra turf, which is scheduled to arrive on Tuesday week, 23rd February.

In the meantime the drainage work and the landscaping task along the fornt of the club and down to the Sincliar Street gate had the lads full attention, as can be see from the picture gallery it has transformed the fron tof the clubhouse, to have the hedge adjacent to the club trimmed back from the ageing mess it was, is a bonus we did not expect.

The Satisitics so far, which indicate the amount of work put into the project are;

Earth & Rubble excavated = 60 Tonnes    Concrete Mixed and laid = 22 Tonnes   Facing Brock Laid  = 800   Concrete Bricks laid = 780  New Perforated rain Laid = 220  Paving Slabs laid = 220 Wide_agle_front_of_club_9th_Marchand finally 220 Man Hours have been put in by 7 or 8 members. What an achievement.
